Matt Damon at Teachers SOS Rally in Washington, DC
There are only two more relatively quiet weeks left of our summer vacation until we all have to return back to school as teachers and our kids as school students.

Today I’d like to share with you what I received recently from a friend in Germany who got this link from a colleague in the U.S. If you use the link below you’ll be able to read and watch a video about one of those honest guys in America who appreciate and support teachers who rally to stand up for their rights and the rights of their school students.

This is Matt Damon with his personal attitude put in such appealing words I’ve never read and listened to before addressed to teachers and those in charge of public education. On the other hand, this makes me think whether I am willing to put the right effort to be up to new challenges and students’ expectations at my school.

You see our colleagues in American public schools face similar problems just like we in Russia and I am wondering if any of our celebrity fellow citizens or politicians would say these coming days a few encouraging words of understanding and support for overburdened but underpaid Russian teachers in public.

Well, SOS – Save Our Schools – Rally in America:  http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/teachers-march-on-washington/2011/07/30/gIQAz48zjI_story.html

Feel free to respond to this post in any way and… have a great school year!

Hi Val,
… I feel really very sad hearing that it's the same in your country too. I have many teacher friends from abroad and I see that it's the same to the most of the countries. I think it's a global phenomenon and I think that it will become worse and worse. You mentioned about the new technologies in classroom have to tell you that in my school there are 125 pupils and we have only 6 computers (they are 8 years old!!!) and most of them don't work! So you can understand the circumstances that we have to face every day in our class.
Thank you for your wishes for the new school year and I wish you the same too.
I believe too that sharing our opinions we can have better information about what's the situation in other countries about educational matters and we can try to improve our work and the conditions of our work. Teachers are the worst rewarded government employees in every country. We have to try to make things better for us and for our children if we want to have a better future in all counties.
Regards from Greece,
Melahrini

Hi Melahrini,
I’m glad to get your response. Thank you very much for sharing your concern. Unfortunately, the situation isn’t much better in my country. Nowadays teachers are expected to do much more than say 5 years ago, especially to use new technologies in the classroom, involve students into more research and creative collaboration. They also have to write reports of every kind about their results, take part in professional competitions. That’s not much different from what all teachers have to do in Greece - everyone actually tries hard to educate the kids that grow up to become full-fledged citizens of their countries. The problem is with authorities that keep forgetting teachers, who are paid on average twice less than the lowest paid government employee. Meanwhile teachers haven’t had any pay rise for about 5 years.
Nevertheless, September 1 is one of the most important days for every teacher in our country, too. I do hope that sharing opinions we get better informed to make the right choice. I hope this school year will be successful and happy for you and for all teachers, in all countries!
Sincerely,
Val

…I'm from Greece. Here in my country every year things are becoming worse and worse for the education. The politicians every year give less and less money for education. They say that they are doing so because of the economical crises but they did the same before the crises too…
…It's not the salary that it only counts but you can understand how this humiliates us. We are trying to do our best using so little. For me the worst of all is that our children get a very law education. It’s so sad to realise that I live in the country where the ancient Greeks did everything to educate their children. Now the politicians do not try to educate our children at all. The only good thing that we teachers still have in my country is respect from the people. I don't know for how long it will last but we have it for the moment…

Matt Damon (Transcript):
I flew overnight from Vancouver to be with you today. I landed in New York a few hours ago and caught a flight down here because I needed to tell you all in person that I think you’re awesome.
I was raised by a teacher. My mother is a professor of early childhood education. And from the time I went to kindergarten through my senior year in high school, I went to public schools. I wouldn’t trade that education and experience for anything.
I had incredible teachers. As I look at my life today, the things I value most about myself — my imagination, my love of acting, my passion for writing, my love of learning, my curiosity — all come from how I was parented and taught.
And none of these qualities that I’ve just mentioned — none of these qualities that I prize so deeply, that have brought me so much joy, that have brought me so much professional success — none of these qualities that make me who I am … can be tested.
I said before that I had incredible teachers. And that’s true. But it’s more than that. My teachers were EMPOWERED to teach me. Their time wasn’t taken up with a bunch of test prep — this silly drill and kill nonsense that any serious person knows doesn’t promote real learning. No, my teachers were free to approach me and every other kid in that classroom like an individual puzzle. They took so much care in figuring out who we were and how to best make the lessons resonate with each of us. They were empowered to unlock our potential. They were allowed to be teachers.
Now don’t get me wrong. I did have a brush with standardized tests at one point. I remember because my mom went to the principal’s office and said, ‘My kid ain’t taking that. It’s stupid, it won’t tell you anything and it’ll just make him nervous.’ That was in the ’70s when you could talk like that.
I shudder to think that these tests are being used today to control where funding goes.
I don’t know where I would be today if my teachers’ job security was based on how I performed on some standardized test. If their very survival as teachers was based on whether I actually fell in love with the process of learning but rather if I could fill in the right bubble on a test. If they had to spend most of their time desperately drilling us and less time encouraging creativity and original ideas; less time knowing who we were, seeing our strengths and helping us realize our talents.
I honestly don’t know where I’d be today if that was the type of education I had. I sure as hell wouldn’t be here. I do know that.
This has been a horrible decade for teachers. I can’t imagine how demoralized you must feel. But I came here today to deliver an important message to you: As I get older, I appreciate more and more the teachers that I had growing up. And I’m not alone. There are millions of people just like me.
So the next time you’re feeling down, or exhausted, or unappreciated, or at the end of your rope; the next time you turn on the TV and see yourself called “overpaid;” the next time you encounter some simple-minded, punitive policy that’s been driven into your life by some corporate reformer who has literally never taught anyone anything. … Please know that there are millions of us behind you. You have an army of regular people standing right behind you, and our appreciation for what you do is so deeply felt. We love you, we thank you and we will always have your back.
